Upper Mustang Trek
  • Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek is a mesmerizing journey through Nepal’s hidden desert-like landscapes, ancient Tibetan culture, and dramatic cliffs adorned with centuries-old caves. Often called the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," Mustang was restricted to outsiders until 1992, preserving its unique traditions and medieval fortress-like villages. The trek follows rugged trails along the Kali Gandaki River, passing through walled cities like Lo Manthang, the capital of the former Mustang Kingdom. With its striking red and ochre cliffs, barren valleys, and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Upper Mustang offers an otherworldly experience unlike any other Himalayan trek.

This trek is a cultural treasure trove, featuring ancient monasteries like Thubchen and Ghar Gompa, where centuries-old murals and statues remain remarkably preserved. The region’s Tibetan heritage is evident in its prayer flags, chortens, and traditional mud-brick houses. A major highlight is the Tiji Festival (held annually in May), a vibrant three-day celebration of Buddhist rituals and masked dances. The landscape transitions from deep gorges to vast, arid plateaus resembling Tibet, offering breathtaking views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri. Unlike other treks in Nepal, Upper Mustang’s rain-shadow location ensures clear skies even during monsoon season, making it an ideal summer trekking destination.
