The Makalu Base Camp (MBC) Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and challenging high-altitude adventures, perfect for experienced trekkers seeking solitude and spectacular Himalayan scenery. The trek takes you deep into the Makalu Barun National Park, a pristine wilderness and biodiversity hotspot home to rare wildlife such as the red panda and snow leopard.

Trekking to Makalu Base Camp (5,000m) offers breathtaking views of Mt. Makalu (8,485m), the world’s fifth-highest peak, along with neighboring giants like Lhotse (8,516m) and Kanchenjunga (8,586m). Unlike the popular Everest and Annapurna routes, the Makalu Base Camp trail remains less crowded, providing a true sense of wilderness and adventure.

Along the route, trekkers traverse dense forests, alpine meadows, and rugged Himalayan landscapes, experiencing both the natural beauty and cultural richness of eastern Nepal. Trip Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)
    Briefing and preparation for the trek.
  • Day 02: Fly Kathmandu to Tumlingtar then drive Num (1500 m)
    Take an early flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar Airport. From Tumlingtar, continue by 4WD jeep toward Num, the traditional roadhead for the Makalu Base Camp Trek. The jeep journey passes through the hilly Arun Valley and can be rough in sections.
  • Day 03 : Trek Num to Seduwa (1550 m) 5/6 hours
    Begin trekking from Num toward Seduwa. The trail descends and climbs repeatedly through forests, terraced farmland and small Rai villages.
  • Day 04: Trek Seduwa to Tashigaon (2100 m) 5/6 hours
    Continue through the Makalu Barun Valley toward Tashigaon, one of the largest settlements on the Makalu trekking route. The trail passes through forest and traditional mountain villages.
  • Day 05: Trek Tashigaon to Khongma Danda(3500 m) 6/7 hours
    Climb through rhododendron and fir forest toward Khongma Danda. The trail becomes steeper as you gain elevation.
  • Day 06: Trek Khongma Danda to Dobate (3,800m) 7/8 hours
    Cross several passes and ridges, with views toward Makalu and surrounding peaks. Depending on the exact route and conditions, the trail crosses Shipton La, Kalo Pokhari and other high passes before descending toward Dobato.
  • Day 07: Trek Dobato to Yangle Kharka (3600) 6/7 hours
    Follow the Barun River deeper into the Makalu-Barun wilderness. The valley becomes increasingly dramatic, with enormous cliffs, glaciers and snow-covered peaks.
  • Day 08 : Trek Yangle Kharka to Langmale Kharka (4,410 m) | 6/7 hours
    Continue deeper into the Barun Valley. The vegetation becomes sparse as you approach the high alpine zone, with spectacular views of Makalu and surrounding peaks.
  • Day 09: Trek Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp (4870 m) 7/8 hours
    Cross Shipton La Pass (4,125m), descend to Dobate.This is the main objective of the trek. Continue through the upper Barun Valley toward Makalu Base Camp. Reach Makalu Base Camp and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Makalu and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
  • Day 10: Trek Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka (3500 m) 7/8 hours
    After an early morning view of Makalu, begin descending through the Barun Valley. Retrace the trail toward Yangle Kharka.
  • Day 11: Trek Yangle Kharka to Dobate 6/7 hours ( 3800 m)
    Continue back through the Barun Valley. Climb toward the higher ridge and return to the Dobato area.
  • Day 12: Trek Dobate, Khongma Danda to Tashigaon (2100 m)| 78 hours.
    Cross the high-pass section again and descend toward Tashigaon. This is another long and physically demanding day
  • Day 13: Trek Tashigaon to Seduwa and Drive from Num to Tumlingtar
    Descend to Seduwa and continue toward Num. Drive to Tumlingtar.
  • Day 14: Fly to Kathmandu.
    Morning Flight to Kathmandu and Drive to Hotel.
