Tharpu Chuli, popularly known as Tent Peak, is situated in the middle of the Annapurna Sanctuary. This expedition follows the North-West ridge to set up a high camp and continues in this direction to reach the peak. This peak truly offers enjoyable climbing and the beautiful panoramic view of the Annapurna mountain range and the massive Annapurna Glacier. The entire trip takes about two to three weeks, including the climb to the summit.
Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak) is located in the Annapurna sanctuary. The Sanctuary is an amphitheater, with a range of impressive Himalayan Peaks forming a vast bowl, accessible only from the South through the Modi Khola River valley. The immense South Face of Annapurna South (7291m), situated at the head of the Annapurna South Glacier, guards the Western flank of the Sanctuary. And right in the middle this all is Tharpu but also seeing ranges of mountain scenery. Tharpu Chuli is 5663m. where the surrounding peaks are presented in all their glory from summit. The South Face Base Came of Annapurna is the fine a scent to the climbing teams, not only to the enjoying. The trek to advance camp involves crossing the South Annapurna Glacier. This is not an easy crossing. It involves a steep descent into the glacier through very rough ground among the confused mass of loose rocks of all sizes on the glacier floor. Then need to be climbed up the other side of the glacier. It takes almost 7 hours to reach advance camp. However, you are rewarded with breath-taking views all the way. Advance camp is roughly at 4500m, just on the snowline.
As well as enjoyable climbing the mountains offers one of the outstanding viewpoints of the Annapurna massive. From its summit you have a superb panorama of Huinchuli (6331m/20771ft), Annapurna South (7219m/ 23684ft), Fang (7647m/ 25089ft), Gangapurna (7455m/ 24459ft), Annapurna III (7555m/ 24787ft), Machhapuchhare (6993m/ 22943ft) and of course Singu Chuli or Fluted Peak (6501m/ 21329ft).
Seen from the moraines above the huts at the Annapurna South base camp, the mountain takes on a shape, aptly described by its former name Tent Peak, with its long South-East Ridge forming the sloping ridge pole. The lower half of the South-West Face is a series of rocky gullies and buttresses giving way to strongly etched snow flutes. Under a lot of snow this becomes a very attractive aspect indeed with a good number of lines. The North-West Ridge, itself the normal line of ascent, which is gained by the flat glacier to the west.
Tharpu Chuli’s relatively low altitude and reasonable approach, without serious objective danger, make this an attractive mountain, especially when combined with its position and ease of access. At present three routes have been recorded and many more are obviously possible. Because of the large number of climbing expeditions that enter the Sanctuary it might well be the peak has received a lot of unnoticed attention.
Tharpu Chuli (Tent peak) 18,577feet / 5,663 meters Elevation 21,326 feet / 6,501 meters (17th highest trekking peak of Nepal).
